The story
Hotel San Carlos opened in March 1928 in downtown Phoenix, an Italian Renaissance-style landmark that was the first air-conditioned high-rise hotel in the city, hosting Hollywood stars from Mae West to Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe; it stands on the site of Phoenix's first school, built as an adobe schoolhouse in the 1870s, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
