The story

Established by the Spanish in 1752, Tubac Presidio is the oldest European settlement in Arizona. The garrison protected settlers from Apache raids and witnessed numerous violent encounters over the following century. The underground ruins of the original 1752 presidio are said to be particularly active, with staff and visitors reporting the smell of gunpowder with no source, the sound of distant drums and running footsteps, and shadowy figures in Spanish colonial-era clothing.

What's reported here

Staff and visitors report the smell of gunpowder with no apparent source, distant drumming, unexplained running footsteps and shadowy figures dressed in Spanish colonial-era clothing. Cold spots and unexplained voices have also been described around the underground ruins of the original presidio.

History & background

Established by the Spanish in 1752, Tubac Presidio was the first permanent European settlement in what is now Arizona. Built to protect settlers and secure Spain's northern frontier, the fort played a key role during conflicts with Apache groups before later becoming a civilian community. Today, the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park preserves the archaeological remains and tells the story of Arizona's Spanish colonial origins.
