The story

Tucked at the edge of the Rubio Woods forest preserve southwest of Chicago, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery is among the most frequently investigated haunted sites in the United States, despite containing fewer than 200 graves. Vandalism and grave robbing over the decades have disturbed many 19th-century burials, and the cemetery's isolation along a disused forest path has given it legendary status among paranormal researchers. A 1991 photograph taken by the Ghost Research Society allegedly shows a woman in Victorian dress seated on a broken headstone when no one was visible at the time of exposure.

What's reported here

Visitors have reported apparitions, glowing orbs, phantom lights, disembodied voices and unexplained cold spots, while the famous 1991 "Madonna of Bachelor's Grove" photograph remains one of the site's best-known paranormal claims.

History & background

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery dates to the 1840s and contains fewer than 200 burials, with the last known interment taking place in 1965. Its isolated woodland setting and decades of vandalism helped fuel the ghost stories for which it is now famous.
