Built in 1796 on a Tunica burial ground, The Myrtles has appeared on virtually every American most-haunted list for decades. The most frequently reported apparition is Chloe, an enslaved woman who was punished by the plantation's owner and later killed by others on the property. A triple-arched window near the front staircase allegedly holds a child's handprint that reappears no matter how many times the glass is cleaned.
Guests and staff report sightings of a woman believed by some to be Chloe, along with unexplained footsteps, children's voices and mysterious handprints said to appear on a window near the main staircase. Shadowy figures and sudden cold spots are also commonly reported.
Built in 1796, The Myrtles Plantation is one of the oldest surviving plantation homes in Louisiana. Stories linking the property to a Tunica burial ground and the legend of Chloe form part of its long-standing folklore, although aspects of these accounts are disputed by historians.
