The story
Double Trouble Historic District preserves a complete Pine Barrens company village within Double Trouble State Park in Ocean County, New Jersey — sawmill, cranberry sorting and packing house, schoolhouse and workers' cottages built by the Double Trouble Company, whose bogs shipped cranberries into the twentieth century; the name is the best in the Barrens, credited in telling to a dam that muskrats breached twice in quick succession — 'here's double trouble' — though versions vary as good names deserve. The state restored the village and interprets it seasonally, the bogs still flooded crimson at harvest demonstrations. Its lore is Pine Barrens standard-issue, told lightly: figures among the cottages at dusk, footsteps on the sorting-house floors, voices in the pines, and the Barrens' wider cast — the Jersey Devil's range runs everywhere here — brushing the village's edges in regional telling. Nothing documented anchors it. Present Double Trouble as industrial-village heritage first — cranberries, cedar and company life — with its dusk figures the pines' usual whisper.
