The story
Walpack Center waits in the Walpack Valley of Sussex County, New Jersey — a white-steepled crossroads village of church, school, post office and homes whose people were removed in the 1960s when the federal government condemned the valley for the Tocks Island Dam, a reservoir project that public opposition and cost ultimately killed; the dam was never built, the land became Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, and the emptied villages — Walpack Center, Millbrook and their neighbours — remain as preserved shells, some interpreted, most silent, monuments to a displacement without purpose. The valley's telling grew in that silence: lights in the church at night, figures on the lanes and porches, voices from empty houses, and the older Ridge and Valley lore the communities always carried; Millbrook hosts living-history days that leaven the quiet. The real grief here is documented — families uprooted for nothing — and the record honours it first.
