The story

Pennhurst State School and Hospital opened in 1908 on a campus above the Schuylkill near Spring City, Pennsylvania, and for eight decades it confined thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in conditions that became a national shame: overcrowding, neglect and abuse documented by Bill Baldini's 1968 television exposé 'Suffer the Little Children' and by the federal litigation that followed, which helped establish disabled Americans' civil rights and closed Pennhurst in 1987. That history — real people, real suffering, a movement born of it — must lead any account of the place. The abandoned campus decayed for decades before private owners opened parts for history tours, paranormal events and a commercial Halloween attraction, a use survivors' advocates have publicly contested; television investigations popularised reports of voices, cries, shadow figures, touches and moving objects in the wards and tunnels. The record should present those reports as event-era telling, keep the residents' dignity foremost, note the attraction controversy neutrally, and direct access questions to the site's official pages.

What's reported here

Event-era visitors and television investigations describe voices and cries in the wards, shadow figures in the tunnels, touches and moving objects — telling that must stay subordinate to the residents' real history.

History & background

Opened in 1908 and closed by federal litigation in 1987 after documented neglect and abuse of disabled residents — a landmark of disability civil-rights history; the campus now hosts tours and a contested haunted attraction.
