The story
The Old Charleston Jail rose in 1802 on Magazine Street and held prisoners for 137 years: debtors and the condemned, pirates awaiting execution, Civil War prisoners, and enslaved and free Black people caught in the machinery of a slave society — a brutal record that is documented history, not atmosphere, and must be told soberly. Its most retold chapter concerns Lavinia Fisher, hanged in 1820 for highway robbery, whose legend — the beautiful murderess in her wedding dress, defiant on the gallows — has grown far beyond the court record. Conditions in the jail were harsh and many died within its walls. Since its 1939 closure the building has been preserved and became the centrepiece of Charleston's ghost-tour tradition, with guides, visitors and investigators describing cell doors and chains heard moving, figures in the corridors and tower stair, touches and voices, and a heavy atmosphere in the upper cells; it has featured repeatedly on national paranormal programmes. These accounts should be presented as tour-era reports and legend layered over real suffering, with Fisher's story flagged as embellished folklore.
