The story

Pioneer Living History Museum spreads its ninety acres in the desert north of Phoenix, Arizona — a preservation village assembled from the 1960s onward by moving endangered territorial buildings here from across the state: the Flying V cabin, an 1880s Methodist church, Victorian houses, a schoolhouse, print shop and the reconstructed opera house among some thirty structures, interpreted in costume as a working frontier community. Museum telling holds that the buildings did not arrive empty: staff, interpreters and event visitors describe a woman in the Victorian house's upper rooms, footsteps in the church and schoolhouse, singing from the opera house after close, figures in period dress who resolve into no interpreter, and cabin doors that mind themselves — accounts the museum airs on its own seasonal ghost tours, attributed in telling to the buildings' original households travelling with their timber. Undocumented, cheerful, and fitting a village of orphaned architecture. Present Pioneer as rescue-preservation first — Arizona's endangered buildings given a common home — its travelling residents the museum's fond tradition. Hours and events from official pages.
